Hi Kent,
My Design Project Contextual Topic is about Brandscaping. I will be using SK
Jewellery as my client to explore ways & techniques to elevate the brand’s
corporate image to a next higher level.
My Research Project Contextual Topic is about Transitional Spaces. I will
explore the relationship of a spatial linkage by using Music as a
communicator. The possibility of using Scoring Spaces as the Title of the
project.
Regards,
Ching Yew
Hi CY,
With branding as a contextual issue, you will need to find out what is SK’s company philosophy and branding strategy. Normally, they will have a branding consultant that provides recommendations. Get that report and propose a brief and design that is in line with the recommendations. As you are also dealing with exclusive retail design, you may want to get some case studies on the this area. How about a Wykidd exclusive shop?
Interesting Reserach project. Music & spaces. If you know Ong Tze Boon from Ong & Ong architects, his Masters thesis was on Music & architecture. Anyway, your research will possibly be between musical space and physical space.

Hi Kent,
Below is my content of the learning contract:
Improvement area 1 :
I am graduated from architectural field and holding dip in architecture.
Years back I have joined into interior field and worked for 2 years in this
line. Within this period, I have not explored much from my working
experience in terms on designing skills and the conceptual development due
to restrict to client’s budget. Therefore in this degree course, I would
like to improve the skill of conceptual design development, and the way how
an interior designer should work into a proper ways, or the technique of how
they start to do a design which I have not learned from the very first
place. Pardon me if I am wrong, to me that should be some differences in
between an architect and an interior designer, in terms of the scope of
works, or some respective areas that we should consider as an interior
designer.
Improvement area 2 :
I would intent to polish up the presentation skills in terms of
graphically (boards, etc.) by using 3D software and also verbally.
Contextual topic and background report:
Sosial (local) - stress,
Design proposal: Designing a meditation place
- Stress levels increased in this city.
- Stress causes - social and financial problems, medical illness, family
history, etc.
- Symptom - Depression, nerviousess, anxiousness, diarrhea, etc.
- Prevention and reduce stress is important because: it will affecting our
phycical or mental functioning and at the same time might happen other
sosial issue such as suicide and murder.
Design approach proposal: “Hi-tech” and “minimalist” design, “wrap”
philosophy from Toyo Ito.
Case study: yoga centre, spa centre, Sauna centre.
Potential site: CPD area.
Please advise. Thanks and have a nice day.
Regards,
Rachel
Hi Rachel,
I understand your concern as to the difference between approach to architecture & interior design. You may think the two should be approached very differently. However, at a conceptual level, they are not very much different. It is only the scale that is different. There are 2 different types of interior designers essentially. The decorators(stylists) and designers. Decorators basically apply styles available from magazines. Designers have their own style not availble in magazines. Of course you need technical skills too. In NAFA’s diploma course which is well-known for training in techinical skills, those have been covered. Hence, at degree level, we are not too concerned about technical skills.
How to be more conceptual? Read!!! If you read international magazines and books on designers, they all explain their conceptual processes and philosophies behind their design. We can’t read for you. I can bring some good magazines/books for you once in while. But really, you need to start reading about designs that you like. Do you like homes, commercial, retails, offices or restaurants? Our library has got really good magazines such as Wallpaper & ID. Conceptualization is about thinking. To think, you need to read. Or else you will be consumed in your own imagination.
Your contextual issue of stress is relevant. Do some research on some yoga, meditation centres in Spore and find out what other ‘destressing’ activities can be incorporated ‘de-stress’ centre. A less-is-more approach is fine but do explian why a ‘wrap’ philosophy is suitable for this ‘destressing’ space.

Hi Kent
I have spend two days searching for structural plans for a shophouse in Emerald Hill Road. Even tried an agent (she was not even eager to sell me one!) Authoties say I need a letter form the owner with the latest prove of property tax payment. As a class we made a list of plans available between us, but nothing in Emerald hill so far! Can you help?

For building plans that are really old (before 1950), go to this link http://www.a2o.com.sg/a2o/public/search/index.html
These are the original shophouse/building plans, you will need to do a quick Autocad draft , shouldn’t take too much time.
For new commercial building plans, what the last cohort did was to go to the selected building, look for the fire-escape plan, snap it with your camera. Do a quick Autocad draft using the photos after you have scaled them.
